You may have heard it all before, but the following safety advice bears repeating. You can't be too careful!

Safety Advice You Don't Want to Forget

Just because you've never been robbed/mugged, raped or attacked in any other way doesn't mean it can't happen to you. Follow this safety advice to avoid the risk:

At night, stay in well-lit, busy areas. Know your surroundings. Try to park under street lights, too.
Look and act confident. Look like you know where you're going and walk tall.
Keep valuables in different areas of your body. For example, keep your keys in a pants pocket, your money in a jacket pocket and your cell phone in a purse or gym bag.
If you are attacked, yell, "FIRE!" instead of "HELP!" You'll attract more attention.
Try to keep valuables hidden. For example, don't show a friend new jewelry in public, don't talk on your cell phone in public unless it's absolutely necessary and don't carry a laptop unless you have to.
When jogging or walking, don't wear headphones unless you're in the gym. You won't be able to hear an approaching attacker.
Don't talk on your cell phone a lot in public. It will make you less aware of your surroundings, and being alert and aware is some of the best safety advice you can take.
Don't put yourself in a situation where you are walking in an isolated area or a dark parking lot. Good safety advice is not to walk to your car alone at night, and when traveling, stay together. If you do find yourself traveling alone or walking alone, make sure someone knows where you are and where you are going so they know when to expect you. That way, if something bad happens and you don't show, your friend or loved one will know where to look for you. That could save your life.
