Weather Safety Tips
We all love good weather; sunshiny days, rainy nights, light snowfall. But what do you do when the weather becomes more aggressive? Well, first of all, you need to know about weather safety, and weather safety precautions. Each situation is different and there are weather safety tips for different scenarios. Here are a few.
Severe Weather Safety Tips
Here are some weather safety tips for different severe weather situations
Lightning Tips
- If you are able to hear thunder in the area, you are definitely close enough to a storm to be hit by lightning. Get to safety as immediately.
- Try to find a sturdy building, or a car with a hard top. Do not take refuge in in small sheds, under trees or convertible automobiles.
- Get out of the water (pool, ocean, lake, etc). Do not take a bath or shower.
Tornado Tips
- Find shelter (a basement if available). If not, find the lowest interior room or hallway and get under a sturdy piece of furniture.
- Do not go near windows.
- Do not try to outrun tornado in your car. If caught outside or in a vehicle, abandon car and lie in a ditch of some sort (not a storm ditch however).
- Abandon mobile homes
Flash Flood Tips
- Know how your drainage system works in your neighborhood.
- Keep your car fueled, you may need to leave if conditions are severe.
- Do not go around roadblocks, and do not drive through flooded streets.
- Never cross roads covered in water.
Hopefully with these weather safety tips you will know what to do when caught in an emergency situation. Take all warnings seriously and do as your Emergency Response Teams tell you. They have warnings and evacuations for a reason. Don't be a hero and try to stay behind. Your safety comes first.
